Mandibular Condyle Shape and Symmetry in 4- to 19-Year-Old Children and Early Adolescents

Background: The prevalence of TMD (temporomandibular disorder) in children and early adolescents varies widely. can cause permanent facial deformities affect occlusion speech, which will growth, development, quality life. For prevention, detection is needed. However, often not possible due to a lack understanding the normal shape condyle. Research on condyle symmetry has been much done. Purpose: To evaluate condyles population aged 4–19 years determine most dominant symmetry. Methods: 220 mandibular 110 (mean 11.4 years) were analyzed retrospectively using an orthopantomograph. Condyle types primary, mixed, dentition categorized according Yale (convex, rounded, flat, angled) Chaudhry classification (oval, diamond, bird beak, crooked). Right left was observed previous study by Ribeiro. Results: In dentition, shapes (Yale, Chaudhry): 91.6% 100% oval; 95.8% 97.9% 98% 97% oval, respectively. Asymmetry right found primary dentition; there 2 cases mixed 3 dentition. Conclusion: years, are: convex, angled (Yale), or beak (Chaudhry). are dominated rounded oval shapes. incidence asymmetry probably increases with age.
